Crossy Road Made With Unity

Crossy Road is enjoyable, sweet, addictive and full of social records. Moreover it earns money. Hipster Whale currently earned over a million dollars from utilizing Unity Ads in the iOS version of the game itself.

Andy Sum and Matt Hall met in October 2013 within a monetization speak at a seminar and after doodling a whale on their notes, began speaking game ideas. Motivated by Froggy and Flappy Bird, including Disco Zoo and Fez, Crossy Road was a twelve-week plan. The Australian duo worked remotely the whole time. The game introduced on the App Store November 20.

Matt has produced three different App Store top games. For Andy, Matt’s junior by 15 years, Crossy Road is actually his first commercial mobile launch. So Matt received the accountability for the mobile-specific information, while Andy tested out the design and style in the Unity editor.

I did a lot of fine tuning on the difficulty to keep the curve satisfying. I always tested it on Matt first,  he says.

To generate money, they created a monetization strategy inspired by NimbleBit's puzzler Disco Zoo.

I played Disco Zoo and thought that video ads were a really good way to earn money without getting into people’s faces. We just needed to figure out a fun reason for players to watch them, Hall said.

By offering gamers an option, Andy Sum describes they made an effort to make Crossy Road as clear as possible.

We didn’t want any consumable purchases, we wanted to do something that everybody could pay a little bit for if they wanted to, but where it wasn’t necessary to keep paying.
